Recommendation and Review

On January 11, 2022, the City Manager issued a Declaration of Local Emergency due to the sudden and dramatic increase in COVID-19 cases as a result of the highly transmissible Omicron variant.  This Declaration of Local Emergency was ratified by City Council on January 11, 2022.  The City’s Deputy Emergency Coordinator has advised that the spike in COVID-19 cases experienced in the City and surrounding areas in January of this year, while far from completely over, has dramatically subsided.  Based on data and models from the Virginia Department of Health, the Deputy Emergency Coordinator advises that as of March 1, 2022, the spike in cases should have subsided to the extent that it no longer constitutes a threat to the residents of Harrisonburg necessary to continue the Declaration of Local Emergency.
