Recommendation and Review
The previous franchise of Columbia Gas of Virginia, Inc. was for a term of 40 years, the maximum permitted under Virginia law. The grant of a franchise authorizes Columbia Gas to construct, maintain, and operate facilities within City right-of-way to transmit and distribute gas throughout the City.
At its January 12, 2021 meeting Council expressed a desire to limit the term of the franchise to 2050 to be consistent with Council’s recently passed resolution regarding environmental goals. Columbia Gas has agreed to that time frame.
