Title

Consider adopting a resolution for the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) Enhanced Hazardous Duty Benefits (Election of Emergency Medical Technicians)

Body

Presented By:  Ande Banks, Interim City Manager

Recommendation and Review

Virginia Retirement System requires that political subdivisions of the Commonwealth of Virginia elect classifications outlined by them by resolution of the political subdivision’s governing body related to Enhanced Hazardous Duty Benefits. The City of Harrisonburg has already elected Hazardous Duty Benefits for Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters. The City may elect Emergency Medical Technicians. The Harrisonburg Fire Department is hiring two full-time Community Paramedics that are eligible for Enhanced Hazardous Duty Benefits and the 1.85% Hazardous Duty Multiplier, should City Council wish to elect these benefits for these new positions. The positions that are eligible for the benefits shall be full-time.

The earliest effective coverage can be implemented on the 1st of the month following an affirmative vote for the resolution from City Council.
