Title

Consider adopting a resolution approving the city’s participation in the Proposed Settlement of Opioid-Related Claims against the Sackler Family and directing the city manager to execute the documents necessary to effectuate the city’s participation in the settlement

Body

Presented By:  Chris Brown, City Attorney

Recommendation and Review

The proposed resolution authorizes the City of Harrisonburg to participate in a national settlement agreement with the Sackler family, owners of Purdue Pharma, resolving opioid-related claims. The settlement will provide $6.5 billion nationwide, with funds allocated under the Virginia Opioid Abatement Fund and Settlement Allocation Memorandum of Understanding, consistent with prior opioid settlements involving distributors, manufacturers, and pharmacy chains. Participation would allow the City to recover its share of settlement funds to help address the ongoing impacts of the opioid epidemic on local emergency services, law enforcement, public health, and related programs.
